Themes in Literature Course Description:
Length/Credits: 1 semester/1 credit
Open to: Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
This course based on Indiana’s Academic Standards for English/Language Arts and emphasizing the High School Literature Standards is a study of universal themes, such as the journey of the hero, the trials of youth, the search for identity, and other themes appropriate to the level and interests of students.
The course may be limited to a few important related themes. Students examine representative works in various genres by authors of diverse eras and nationalities and the way themes may be treated differently in the works because of the cultural context.
Students analyze how themes illuminate humanity’s struggle to understand the human condition.
