Our History
The History of Our Indiana Online High School
The Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township in Indianapolis started the Indiana Online Academy in 1999, the first online school in Indiana. It soon became apparent virtual education could benefit students from all over Indiana. The Indiana Online Academy expanded and was geared for students who needed to earn additional credits for any one of a variety of reasons. It was also used for credit recovery.
We became successful because of the high quality of our teachers and our curriculum. Teachers were required to have weekly contact with the students to ensure students understood the material and were making adequate progress.
After the triumph of Indiana Online Academy, the district’s night school and alternative school launched online credit recovery. This is a blended environment of virtual education and direct teacher interaction, with teachers guiding students through the online curriculum in a computer lab, allowing the teachers to work one-on-one with each student or in small groups. The benefit to our students was overwhelming. Students who previously felt they would never graduate were learning, growing, and succeeding. We later launched an online hybrid learning lab at our Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center. Students in our district earn approximately 4,500 credits each year through virtual education.
We applied this experience – and our students’ great track record of success – to create Achieve Virtual. This is the MSD of Wayne Township’s newest virtual education endeavor.
Achieve Virtual is now a fully-separate online high school that individualizes and personalizes education for students all over Indiana. It provides a different pathway to a high school diploma. We offer students an affordable option to accelerate learning, recover lost credits or earn a complete Indiana Core 40/Academic Honors Diploma.
Achieve Virtual is Indiana’s only online high school from an Indiana public school district. It is operated by the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township in Indianapolis and is backed by the district’s rich academic history and 14 years of online learning experience.
